To facilitate important conversations about race, the OSU Extension Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force is collaborating with the CFAES Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to host a book discussion club in 2021. All CFAES staff and faculty are eligible to participate. We will be reading and discussing the book "Why are all the Black kids sitting together in the cafeteria?" by Beverly Daniel Tatum in 2021. This is a yearlong commitment where we will read and discuss a chapter of the book each month from January - December.

There will be two different ways to participate in the book discussion:

  1. Synchronously via Zoom - participants will meet the third Friday of each month* at noon to discuss a section of the book.
  2. Asynchronously via Microsoft Teams - participants will be added to a Team where they can view, post and comment on responses to discussion questions.

*the first discussion will be held on January 22 as this month has five Fridays.

Dates and topics are as follows:

  • January 22 - Prologue and Introduction
  • February 19 - Chapter 1: Defining Racism
  • March 19 - Chapter 2: The Complexity of Identity
  • April 16 - Chapter 3: The Early Years
